I follow a doctor who says, “When food that is good for you, like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, doesn’t taste good to you, then it’s time for a reset.” Research shows that what we feed ourselves determines our gut bacteria and the bacteria that we feed will send signals to you to eat whatever it (the bacteria) needs to keep it alive.
This is interesting to me because I believe this truth that speaks about how our bodies are designed and what we feed our bodies determines what they crave and want… also applies to what we feed our spirits, hearts, minds and relationships.
Many great witnesses of truth have said similar things throughout the ages. They have spoken about truth and it’s ability to create order, fill up, nourish, encourage, inspire, help, defend, heal and strengthen. If we receive from others or give ourselves anything other than the truth and the true things that we are designed for and are designed for us, then we are going to have serious problems. Soren Kierkegaard says, “The purity of heart is to will one thing.”
“II. If it be Possible for a Man Really in Truth to Will One Thing, Then He Must Will the Good in Truth.
A. If it be Possible for a Man to Will the Good in Truth, Then he Must be at One With Himself in Willing to Renounce All Double-Mindedness.
Therefore, if it be possible for a man to will one thing, then he must will the Good, for only the Good is one. Thus if it becomes a fact that he wills one thing, he must will the Good in truth.” –Søren Kierkegaard, ‘Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing’
This means if we feed our hearts junk instead of truth, and I am using the word “hearts” to speak to our emotional health, then our feelings will be disordered. Our feelings will be all over the place and these disordered feelings will demand to be fed. Have you ever known someone addicted to drama or someone always wanting to be sad, happy or mad, and how they continually feed those feelings with the very things to make them sad, happy or mad?
If we feed our minds junk instead of truth, and I am using the word “minds” to talk about mental health, then there’s no way we can produce anything other than anxiety, fragmentation, hopelessness and a disordered way of thinking. Have you noticed how many people have absolutely no common sense, talk out of both sides of their mouth and their very own lives contradict every word out of their mouth? There’s no way a person can speak truth, if they aren’t imitating truth and living truth. There’s no way we can feed our minds junk and produce Truth.
Likewise, if we feed our bodies junk instead of the real and true food it needs and is designed to be fed, then we will produce sickness. It’s not a matter of if we will get sick but when and when will sickness kill us. The feeding of junk to our bodies produces trauma and physical trauma affects our spiritual, emotional, mental and relational health.
Yes, what we feed our bodies or as The Bible calls them “our holy temples” reflects what we have fed our spirits and it also determines what we will feed our spirits, and vice versa. What we feed our spirits determines what we feed our hearts, minds and bodies and relationships, and our spirits reflect what we have fed our hearts, minds, bodies and relationships. We cannot deprive our spirits of the Truth it needs to order, encourage, nourish, inspire and help our spirits, hearts, minds, bodies and relationships function as they are designed.
Of course, the same truth applies to our relationships. If we feed our relationships crumbs, just parts of ourself, lies and we don’t give our whole, holy, and healthy true selves, then our relationships will reflect what we give, and those relationships will help determine us. Even here, if we don’t give truth and our true selves, then our relationships will be disordered and they will crave parts of us that will literally suck the life right out of us.
With these truths in mind, I keep asking myself why we have epidemics of diet-related disease & sickness, loneliness, addiction, anxiety, apathy, depression, suicides, discord and division? I think the answer comes back to what we are feeding ourselves.
It is obvious that we are not feeding ourselves what is right, good, excellent and true because LOOK AT THE RESULTS. Instead, we are feeding on the very things that produce diet-related disease and sickness, loneliness, addiction, anxiety, apathy, depression, suicides, discord and division.
Unfortunately, we cannot blame this on anyone but ourselves because we freely participate in this world as a consumer and we freely choose to consume junk over what is right, good and true.
Do we realize that when we choose not to receive and give ourselves what is right, good and true, and we choose to feed on junk that by feeding on junk… we are sowing discord.
Let me ask you, “Are you sowing discord in your own spirit, heart, mind, body and relationships?”
For Christians, sowing discord is something God hates. Here’s 100 Bible verses about it. https://www.openbible.info/topics/sowing_discord
Do you know what sowing discord produces? It produces imbalance, chaos, disorder, sickness, disease, division, hate, murder, coveting, envy, strife, division, gluttony and idolatry.
For human beings, the same Truth applies to you. You are not designed to feed on junk. The human being design is the same for everyone. We are designed to be weak, fragile, vulnerable, sensitive, needy, transparent, desperate and dependent on Truth to create order, balance, rhythm and flow, Truth strengthens our health as a whole person and it strengthens our spirits, hearts, minds, bodies and relationships.
We need truth to remember who we are and how we are naturally designed to be healthy, whole, holy and human. Perhaps, the reason why we don’t crave truth is because we have no truth in us that craves the truth.
But..What is Truth?
And we are back to the second most important question…Until we ask and answer what are our truths, then we will never get to the most important question.
What is the truth? I think the first truth we need to be able to say is the truth about your own self. Where are you today? How are you today? Are you experiencing and enjoying peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control? Are your spirit, heart, mind, body and relationships experiencing and enjoying peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control? Are you moving out of fear or love? What are you full of? Who tells you who you are? Where is your hope rooted?
Start asking the questions and answering the questions closest to you. Can you tell the truth about you and your life?
More than ever… we have to take the personal responsibility to stop participating and feeding the chaos, and start feeding on truth to create the space where we can receive and give the love we desperately want and need, and are designed for to become our best selves both individually and collectively. We will know that we have found truth and we are feeding on truth, when we are able to Love with all our heart, mind, spirit and body. Remember… love doesn’t sow discord, it sows more love and more truth.
