Diets Don’t Work

Diets don’t work 

When I say diets don’t work, I do not mean that diets don’t work to help you lose weight. There are thousands of before and after pictures, personal testimonies and evidence that diets can help people with weight loss. We have been told that diets are scientifically proven weight loss formulas designed to create a caloric deficiency and given enough blood, sweat and tears…anyone can diet and lose weight. So, when diets don’t work for you, the formula says that you didn’t work hard enough to diet. The blame, guilt and shame of not losing weight on a diet will always fall on the dieter because according to the diet and exercise industry, “Caloric deficiency is a guaranteed weight loss formula.” ​

When I say diets don’t work…

I mean living, breathing, feeling and thinking human beings are not designed to be on diets. To reduce ourselves to bodies and to fragment the gift of food into calories, portions, fat grams, carbs and proteins, in order to into a lifeless formula, will result in forgetting who we are as human beings and how we naturally designed to be and live.

See, I believe that human beings are naturally designed to be healthy, to be holy, to be whole and to be finite human beings, and we are designed to practice exercises that nourish our spirits, hearts, minds, bodies and relationships at the same time as healthy, whole and holy human beings. We require nourishment and we are naturally designed to actively participate in filling ourselves up with things that are good, beautiful, excellent, worthy and true. I do not believe human beings are designed to diet because diets are formulas built on deficiency and diets only work if you are able to deny and fragment yourself physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and relationally. 

On the other hand, I believe that health is part of your natural design and the practice of nourishment is built on rest, and rest can only happen when we are known and loved. This means that we need relationships to strengthen health and that nourishment happens when we work, play, eat, exercise, feel, think and relate as whole people with other whole people. 

Regardless of what the diet and fitness industry says, we will never be healthy doing our own thing. We desperately need each other and we (human beings) are fundamentally designed to be givers and receivers, and to be nourished as we give and receive encouragement, love and truth on a daily basis in relationships. It is through relationships that we remember who we are, how we are designed and it is through relationships we are encouraged, inspired, nourished and move to receive and give nutrients. This includes the giving and receiving of foods that do not produce any negative results, so we can eat without rules and without manipulating our food or ourselves.

The reason why diets don’t work is and the reason why 88% of Americans are suffering from diet-related disease is because…

  • Diets try to fragment and reduce a living spirit, heart, mind, body to variables to fit into a lifeless formula.
  • Human beings are not designed to be reduced to variables and food is not designed to be used as a means to an end. Instead, both human beings and food are designed to be gifts and both are designed to be experienced and enjoyed as gifts.
