It’s Easy

It’s easy to forget
Who we are
As we sit and stare
Into the world’s abyss

It’s easy to forget
Who Love is
When feeling good replaces sacrifice
And fighting the good fight
Is more than thoughts and prayers

It’s easy to forget
Who Truth is
When we are busy
Trying to fill the void
With experiences

It’s easy to forget
How we are designed to be
Healthy and whole
Holy and free
How to be givers and receivers
Of life, love, truth and mercy

It’s easy to forget
Who my neighbor is
Providentially placed beside me
While looking for friends
Outside my community

It’s easy to forget
The narrow way
Of humility
With beams in my eye
And gluttony blinding me
Chasing everything I want
Denying everything I need
Refusing The Way
Of Holy Poverty

It’s easy to forget
That the battle rages
In my own hypocrisy
As my eyes are cast down
Kissing the feet of idolatry

It’s easy to forget
That change starts with me
Confessing my own sin
Instead wagging my finger
In the book of faces

It’s easy to forget
That I am the same
Even worse than my enemy
Like Paul, I know myself
So, I cry out
“Woe is me!”

It’s easy to forget
That the wide way is easy
It doesn’t require much
Just some words and basic decency
To create an illusion
And believe a delusion
That I imitate The Way
Who became nothing
Embraced humiliation
Lived on earth helping and healing

It is easy to forget
How easy it is to curate a crown
Rather than bend down and pick up a cross
To follow Love into pain and brokenness
Pursuing the forgotten and the lost.
