Christmas Poem

Just finished my second book of poems! It is called *Le Point Vierge” (explanation below).
I thought I would post one of my poems called Christmas Poem from Le Point Vierge as I bid adieu to this year, and create a space for this sacred time of year.

“Christmas Poem”

Christmas is coming
Christmas has been
Christmas is now
Christmas is the beginning and the end

Who knew
In a birth
We were also seeing
Resurrection occur

Before our very eyes
The veil had been torn
Between Heaven and earth
So, the Son could leave home

A new light rising out of darkness
Love growing hands and feet
Grace becoming a physical form
Truth entering time to speak

Perhaps, there is more here
Than meets the eye
When Christ was born
Humility was lifted high

Out of the dust
Hope and Joy came
Before we had the chance
To know Him by name

Kindness and goodness
Was brought back to life
When Heaven reached down
And took a young wife

So through her
A child could be born
To breathe in our hurt
To absorb our scorn

Who is this God
Who allows us to participate
Who weds us with him
In our most lowly state

He came into us
Absurdity was his start
Starting with the fact
That God fashioned himself a heart

The Creator made himself a brain and lungs
And flesh and bone
He poured himself into poverty
The Alpha and Omega became a defenseless baby
A human being expressed God’s Sovereignty

But what he exhaled
On that first day
Was more than air
It was the gift of grace

Yes, yes…don’t you see
When He breathed in earth’s sin and sod
The very next thing He did
Was to breathe out God

And like a virus
He began to spread
Good tidings and cheer
To the living and to the dead

Heaven erupted
With Thanksgiving and praise
When the one lying in the manager
Was found to be The Ancient of Days

Peace on earth
Was on the ground
God had not just come close
He had bent all the way down

Through a child
Earth’s skin had been pierced
Winter was finally over
Spring had just begun
The angels saw from on high
That’s why they burst into song

Death had already been dealt
A most fatal blow
When God came down from Heaven
To live in the flesh below

How do we not live
Like every day is Christmas?
How do we not know
That everything is a gift?

How do we not see
Every moment is a new start
To change our mind
To change our hearts?

Have we not been given
Everything we need
To do God’s will
In thought, word and deed?

We don’t have to wait for Easter
To experience resurrection
Christmas is the time to give birth
And bring to life a new affection

So, Let your mourning be turned to dancing
Can’t you hear the song of Christmas?
“Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
and come away, for behold, the winter is past;
the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.”

Christmas has come
A time of mystery and wonder
A time of celebration and delight
Earth’s bonds have been torn asunder
God has freed us from death
By giving up His life

Come now! Tear open the shudder of our eyes
And throw up the sashes of our hearts
To receive and give the gift of Christmas
‘Tis the season of Sabbath rests and restarts.

*“Again, that expression, le point vierge, (I cannot translate it) comes in here. At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal, from which God disposes of our lives, which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our own mind or the brutalities of our own will. This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God in us. It is, so to speak, His name written in us, as our poverty, as our indigence, as our dependence, as our sonship. It is like a pure diamond, blazing with the invisible light of heaven. It is in everybody, and if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely…. I have no program for this seeing. It is only given. But the gate of heaven is everywhere.”
